What is Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)?

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is a specific type of cognitive-behavioral therapy that has been proven effective for treating Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). When a person experiences a traumatic event, it often changes how they view themselves, others, and the world—frequently leading to "stuck points" or beliefs like "It was my fault," "The world is entirely dangerous," or "I can't trust anyone."

Our IOP clinicians use CPT to help you identify and challenge these unhelpful beliefs. Instead of just "getting over" the trauma, CPT teaches you a new way to handle the upsetting thoughts that keep you stuck in the past.

How CPT Works in Our Program:

  • Identifying "Stuck Points": We work together to find the specific thoughts that are blocking your recovery.

  • Processing the Trauma: You will learn to examine the evidence for and against these thoughts, helping you develop a more balanced and realistic perspective.

  • Reclaiming Five Key Areas: CPT focuses on restoring a sense of Safety, Trust, Control, Esteem, and Intimacy—areas of life that are often shattered by traumatic experiences.

By offering both CPT and Prolonged Exposure (PE), our specialized IOP provides a comprehensive toolkit for trauma recovery, allowing us to tailor the treatment to what works best for your specific recovery journey.
