What is Harm OCD?

Harm OCD is characterized by intrusive, unwanted thoughts about causing harm to oneself or others. These thoughts are often violent or disturbing in nature and feel completely out of alignment with the individual’s values. Despite the intensity of these fears, people with Harm OCD are not dangerous—in fact, they are often deeply distressed by the possibility of causing harm. Common compulsions include avoidance (e.g., staying away from sharp objects or loved ones), excessive reassurance-seeking, and mental reviewing to ensure no harm has occurred.
