What is Religious or Moral Scrupulosity?
Scrupulosity is a subtype of OCD involving intense fears about morality, ethics, or religion. Individuals may worry excessively about being sinful, immoral, or a “bad person,” often experiencing overwhelming guilt or fear of punishment. Compulsions can include excessive prayer, confession, reassurance-seeking, or mental review of past actions to determine if they were wrong. These symptoms go beyond typical religious or moral concerns and can significantly interfere with daily functioning.
